Oliver's Twist Open
Our sponsored trail Oliver's Twist opened last weekend and is already proving popular and will fast become a Mill Block classic.
The intermediate/grade 3 trail built and designed by Southstar Trails suffered some damage from cattle and 10 days of rain so we have been repairing pug marks and have groomed the top and bottom sections but it's still a work in progress. We and others are volunteering our time to get it riding the best it can be considering the fact livestock are present in the forest so be please be patient.
It has been great to see so many people enjoying it, hooting and beaming on the way past. Strava reports over 60 people have been down in the first week with world class local DHer Brook Macdonald currently fastest.
Oliver's Twist is well designed so it's achievable for most with everything rollable but there is a host of little doubles, triples, tight berms, hips and a couple of potential wall rides for the advanced.
We named the trail after Ollie who first began mountain biking in Eskdale in the late 1980s when mountain biking first began in New Zealand. We (Ollie, Tony and Dean) all rode fire roads up then hit skinny natural/raked lines down through the trees.
It's been a long wait from first walking it in May 2014 when we talked through ideas to now but it has been worth the wait.
Thanks to HBMTB Club, Kevin McCarthy, Ross Mepham, Carl Larsen, all of the volunteers who helped us prune and clear,Jeff Carter & Southstar Trails for the design and Rohan and Lloyd for the build and the ideas they poured into the track.
